iCan Bike Camp

The 2026 iCan Bike Camp will be held Mon. June 22 through Fri. June 26.

South Fayette Township Parks and Recreation partners with the nonprofit iCan Shine to offer iCan Bike Camp to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional 2-wheel bike throughout a 5-day program.

Using custom-designed bike equipment, each participant attends camp 75 minutes each day for 5 consecutive days.

This camp is available only to residents of South Fayette Township and to members of the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh.

Volunteers

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. No prior experience working with people with disabilities is necessary.

As a volunteer, you can guide and aid campers to so they will learn how to independently ride a 2-wheel bike. In appreciation, you will receive a T-shirt. Student service hours are available.

Program Details

Dates & Times

  • Camp times will be assigned. Each camper must attend the same 75-minute session each day of the program.
    • 8:30 AM-9:45 AM - Session 1
    • 10:05 AM-11:20 AM - Session 2
    • 11:40 AM-12:55 PM - Session 3
    • 2:15 PM- 3:30 PM - Session 4
    • 3:50 PM- 5:05 PM - Session 5

  • $300 per rider for the whole week

Registration

  • For initial intake, please e-mail township recreation coordinator Ian McNeill or call 412-221-8700 ext 222, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM.
  • Only 25 spaces are available (5 campers per session). Signup is first come, first served.
  • A waiting list will be available after registration is full.

Bicycle Purchase

Bicycle Required

Each rider must purchase an appropriate bicycle in advance of the program.

Bikes must be purchased before the start of camp. Although iCan Shine provides adaptive bikes that the campers will ride during the program, all riders also will need their own personal bike to transition to using both during and after camp.

Camper Requirements

Eligibility

This bike camp is available to residents of South Fayette Township and to members of the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh.

Non-residents and non-members are welcome to inquire, but will be put on a waiting list.

Rider Criteria

Campers must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be at least 8 years old (there is no maximum age)
  • Have a disability (ADHD and/or undiagnosed anxiety or motor planning impairments included; no formal diagnosis required)
  • Walk without an assistive device (e.g. walker, crutches)
  • Be able to side-step to both sides (to ensure bike and rider will not fall over when stopping)
  • Be willing and able to wear a properly fitted bike helmet
  • Be able to attend all 5 days of camp
  • Have a minimum inseam of at least 20 inches (measured from floor to seat height while rider is wearing sneakers)
  • Not exceed the weight maximum of 220 pounds (strictly enforced safety and liability concern)
  • Parent or guardian must be available to stay for duration of each session, each day
